Everything you need to know about the program — who it's for, what you'll do, where you'll live, and how to apply.
The J-1 Camp Counselor Program is a cultural exchange program authorized by the U.S. Department of State that places international university students and young adults at accredited American summer camps. As a counselor, you'll live on-site, work directly with campers, and become part of a camp community — while sharing your own culture with everyone you meet.
It's built around genuine cultural exchange, not seasonal labor: you'll develop leadership and teamwork skills, build friendships with staff and campers from around the world, and get the chance to experience American life firsthand, all within the framework of your J-1 exchange visitor status.
Your host camp will match you to a role based on your skills, experience, and the camp's needs. Common positions include:
Supervise and mentor a cabin or group of campers, leading daily activities and providing day-to-day guidance and care.
Coach and lead activities such as soccer, basketball, tennis, or general fitness and team sports.
Support swimming, canoeing, kayaking, or sailing activities (lifeguard/water safety certification may be required or provided).
Lead creative activities such as painting, pottery, jewelry-making, or other hands-on arts programs.
Guide hiking, camping, ropes courses, archery, or other outdoor adventure and wilderness activities.
Lead music, drama, dance, or other performing arts programs and camp productions.

Begin your summer as a camp counselor in the United States.
Camp life runs on a daily rhythm: mornings usually start early with cabin duties and breakfast, followed by activity periods where you'll lead or assist with programming, meals together with your camper group, and evening activities like campfires, talent shows, or free time with fellow counselors. You'll live on-site in staff or counselor housing for the full program, sharing the experience with counselors from across the U.S. and around the world.
It's a full, hands-on schedule — camps rely on counselors being present and engaged with campers throughout the day — but it's also where the friendships, confidence, and memories that make this program worthwhile come from.
Your fee is collected in two parts, so you don't pay the full program fee until you actually have a confirmed camp placement.
Housing and meals during your placement are provided by your host camp. International airfare, visa application fees paid to the U.S. government, and personal expenses are not included. Contact us for current fee amounts.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis — the earlier you apply, the more placement options are available.
